Women and Alcoholism

Women are drinking more in America. Much more. Being an alcoholic woman is a lonely proposition. Not only because of the stigma and shame of it, but because women are really good at keeping things from their families and others who might help them. Yes, there is a socio-economic impact, but it’s probably not what you think. The research shows that the greater instances of alcoholic abuse for women are among those who are better educated and more affluent. However, drinking has gone up among all women, in all socio-economic groups and of all races. In fact women buy, and consume, the larger share of the 800 million gallons of wine sold in the U.S. each year.

Alcohol Addiction Treatment for Women

Alcohol addiction is not the same for women as it is for men. And alcohol addiction treatment shouldn’t be either. Women’s bodies process alcohol differently. They retain more of the alcohol and for longer. Women’s bodies don’t break down a percentage of the alcohol before it hits the blood stream, the way men’s bodies do. Additionally, the percentage of women who die from cirrhosis rose 13% in one decade (2002-2012), while the percentage of men who died from cirrhosis rose 7%. Between 1998 and 2008 the number of severely intoxicated women who ended up in emergency rooms more than doubled. In the years between 1992 and 2008 women who checked into rehab tripled. However, women checking into co-ed rehabs have difficulty getting the attention they need, as groups and other co-ed therapies can be dominated by men. There can also be unwelcomed sexual tension. Women need treatment where they can focus on recovery.
